Black currant

Black currants originate from Central Europe, Himalaya and Central Asia. Proper cultivation of the black currant did not take place until the Middle Ages. The berries appear in bunches and have a very dark, almost black color; the taste is strong and sour. Danish black currants are used for black currant marmalade and the berries are harvested in July/August.
